Will, those things fascinate me as well.Designing them requires knowledge of horology, but the actual making of one like that is quite easy, especially if one has a cnc router like Beall said he did.
Contrary to what one might think, clocks do not require close tolerances as in engineering, but items such as gear teeth need to be consistently shaped and wheels need to run true. Why don't you make one before it's too late? ;)(;

The idea does look like fun doen't it? Did you see the series on Harrison - BBC called 'Longitude'.
I'm pretty sure he didnt have a CNC mill, but his clock still works.
I wish I had seen it-I suppose it will be repeated. I read the little book a couple of years ago. Amazing what they could do and the knowledge those horologist types had . Harrison himself was a cabinet maker, if I'm not mistaken.Philip Marcou
