Greetings to all:
I am a hobbyist woodworker and am ready to attempt some projects using figured woods, particularly figured maple. I am interested in hearing your suggestions on how I should finish bird’s eye and quilted maple. Please include surface preparation in your suggestions.
Thanks in advance.

The best look I've found so far is to sand to 180(any finer on bare wood is basically wasted effort), one coat of boiled linseed oil mixed with equal parts oil base poly urethane and naptha, then at least three coats of polyurethane cut with naptha 70/30. The linseed oil really brings out the figure in maple
Thats a pretty broad question. Some pieces have different requirements, Tables vs Chairs. Or Boxes vs Turned bowls. Will the piece be exposed to little wear or will it be high use?
I personally like shellac, it can enhance the woods figure, but shellac isnt a good choice for a table top. Oil based finishes can yellow over time but produce great looks.
There are several good books out there, Jeff Jewitts is one. Flexner is another.
Hi, Ive had good results by sanding to 180 grit then appling watco danish oil(natural) . apply a heavy first coat let stand for a few hours then buff off with cotton rag ,second and third coats buff off after 30 minuts. let dry ,then apply a top coat of your choice .Ive used paste wax, for a deep satiny look. but for better protection a poly top coat. best of luck.
