I am planning to build this desk with a goal of having it done for Christmas, no inlays on the first one.
In planning the project I have noticed what appears to be a type, or mistake. ON the fold out section while discussing the poplar bricklaid apron it clearly states in text “All the stock is 4 inches wide”, but the picture diagram below this text has a measurement that shows each section as being 4 3/4 wide.
So which is it?
I have some 9″ wide poplar what I could get two pieces out of if they are really only 4″ wide. Otherwise, I’ll have use some other pieces.

Thanks for the help, it sounds like the individual bricks do need to be 4 3/4.
The 4" remark is still confusing since they state that each brick is 7/8 and there are four, which would equal the 3 1/2 depth or height of the front rail. I don't see why 4" was even mentioned.
Thanks again and the more I study the plan the more concerned I become that it's within my league.
Thanks again for the information.

Actually on looking at it again I think I got it wrong. He's laminating 4 strips of poplar one on top of the other, so you're right; you'd have to start with poplar that's 4 3/4 wide and about 7/8 thick. Sorry, mea culpa. However on the diagram the cutout curves don't quite touch the edges of the sections,so you might get away with using 4 1/2 or even 4. Why not try a cardboard template first and measure what's needed? In any case as long as you get the curve right you don't have to have bricks of a specific length as long as they're properly overlapped. Shorter bricks use narrower stock, but then you'd have to fool around with your own measurements and templates.
