here’s a craigslist lathe – http://kalamazoo.craigslist.org/tls/1458046700.html
what do you experts make of it?
it appears to be driven by a flat belt – is this a big deal? – I’ve some experience with flat belts with old machinery, albeit that machinery is slow speed –
any comments or observations?
thanks –

Flat belts are common on lathes that have adjustable speeds that can be changed while the lathe is running. Part of the original mechanism may no longer be there. The lathe looks like it was made out of parts scavenged from a smaller iron bed lathe. There usually isn't a need to change speeds frequently when turning wood. Seems a little pricey for what it is, I'd keep looking.
Beat it to fit / Paint it to match
"Seems a little pricey..."indeed - but it's been up a month - time for a low-ball, if I really want it - my lathe department is sadly lacking - just not sure this is the one I want, even if this guy would pay me to haul it home - the motor/gearing/belt area is poorly presented - your observation of the lathe being made of disparate parts appears right on - thanks -s
