Hi all I am thinking about building a new entry door and was going to make a frame and panel door out of Walnut. The question is with the door being about 1 13/16 thick I think 8/4 Walnut would be to thin so I thought the best solution would be to glue up 5/4 stock insted of spending the extra money for 12/4 stock. What does everybody think about that idea?

Sure, go ahead. That construction may even stop a crack from progressing all the way through. Use waterproof glue. Also consider: Are you in a climate that will be more or less kind to this all wood door? I ask because mine is not. I like steel doors filled with insulation.
I am in Alameda CA near San Francisco, the door will face north on a covered poarch that is well protected from the rain. The existing wood door is over 75 years old and has held up well but the DW does not like it that much. Thanks for your replyTroy
Maybe I'm missing something here, but I think the reason that 1 13/16" thickness became common is because it's what you can reasonably get from 8/4 stock. In any case, I use 8/4 walnut quite often in furniture and don't have a problem planing to that thickness.

Thanks, I guess it depends upon what wood I can find.Troy
