Elevated Wooden Floors-Clearing DC Pipe
Hi,
I’m having a shop built…and want to elevate the floor in the benchroom to be easier on the knees and to allow dust collection/electrical routing. I’ve seen the recent articls in FWW about using 2X4s and powder-actuated nails and then insulating and topping with plywood….all fine and good. However, 2X4s don’t stand tall enough to clear a 4″ dust collection pipe. Could I use 2X6s on end? Could I toenail them with powder-actuated nails? How would one do that?
Any advice is appreciated. I’ll post pics along the way…

Couldn't you use the 2x4s, and arrange them so that some of them form channels for the dust to pass through? That is, you get the dust collection "pipe" for free.
You wouldn't have a smooth surface and that would result in a big loss in air flow. Another idea is place a 2x4 on its face and fasten it down to the floor and then nail another 2x4 on its edge on top of the 2x4 on its flat. This give you a upside down "T" like shape that would give you 5" of clearance.Scott C. Frankland

If you're worried about loss of air flow, make the "pipe" with a larger cross section. Unlike conventional duct, where 6" pipe costs lots more than 4" pipe, this larger area will cost nothing.
if you're having it built custom, can you have a 2x6 laid into the wet concrete along the path of the dc duct? it can be pulled out when the floor is cured, allowing the extra room for the duct, and giving you the extra 2 inches for your ceiling height.
good luck rg
