I picked up a remote today for my 3hp 220v Delta dust collector. At the time I hadn’t considered that the magnetic switch on the machine might present a problem; well, it does. Is there a way to convert the magnetic starter to a mechanical starter so that it will work with the remote?
Thanks,
Kevin

Kevin: You can jumper the start button so that the machine will start anytime it is powered up. THIS COULD BE A SAFETY HAZARD!! Sorry about the capitals but had to emphasize that. It also means that the stop button will only work while it is held in if the remote was on. If you were to forget about the change or someone else was operating it and didn't know....... Another way would be to add a toggle switch that when closed would jumper the start button and when open would leave the machine in it's original condition. It could be labeled: Auto-Manual with Auto meaning the switch was closed. You could just replace the magnetic starter with a proper sized manual one. Don't be tempted by the idea of jamming the contactor closed: that will bypass the overloads. Good luck.

I may be wrong, but I was almost certain the Long Ranger works with a magnetic switch.Maybe a call to Penn State? (assuming your Woodcraft remote will not work)http://www.pennstateind.com/store/lr220-3.html********************************************************

I have the exact same remote starter on my Jet DC, The only thing I have to do is leave the switch on the DC in the ON position. The remote will start and stop the DC with no problem. Yes, my unit is wired for 220V.
OOPS, My starter may not be magnetic, didn't check.

The Jet has a mag switch?------------------------------------

Dear Kevin,
If I understand you correctly, your DC has an on/off switch? I have that LR3 and it looks pretty similar to your set up. I have no switch as the remote IS the switch. My DC (3hp) is wired directly to a plug that then plugs into the remote unit. The on/off action is controlled by the buttons on the keychain. I think that you have to lose the magnetic switch.Best,John
Thanks John, but doesn't this eliminate some of the overload safety features of a switch?Kevin
Dear Kevin,
My DC has an overload on the motor and on the Remote. (Long Ranger 3).Best,John
Sorry, I jumped the gun too quickly the Jet starter is manual. But you could do like did to my jointer when I converted it to 220V. I installed an old AB Allen/Bradley manual switch that has heater overloads and I installed 5amp heaters to protect to motor. Now the motor as well as the circuit are protected.

Kevin, I just checked my DC remote unit and there is a breaker on the top of the unit. So if you loose your magnetic starter and wire direct you should still have protection. Only problem is that they don't say what the amp rating is, but since your unit is 3HP the upper end of the remotes rating, you should be fine.
