Dust port to vacuum hose connection
I have two shop vacuums, a lunch bucket DeWalt and a small Fein.
My question is this: Why don’t the dust ports of the hand held machines I own from Porter-Cable, Delta and DeWalt match the diameter of the hose ends that are supplied with the vacuums? Why don’t the dust ports ‘match’ with the ‘adapters’ sold to reduce or increase the diameter, either ID or OD, to match the hose end with the port on the machine?
Have the manufacturers tried adopting a ‘standard’?
Thanks.

You my friend have just won the praticallity award!!
Festool is one of the very few that have settled on a workable system between tool&vac.

Your complaint is an old one and will probably never be resolved. The best solution is to use the adapters with one end "stepped" at different diameters. You can cut them off at the appropriate diameter.
Of course, if all else fails, grab your duct tape. - lol
Thanks, Dave.I have been using the stepped adapters and duct tape. I'm just tired of reading in the owners manual 'dust port fits the ( insert size here ) ' only to find that none of my adapters quite fit, ID or OD. So I get the best fit I can and tape it in place only to have to come back with my gooo remover and strip the tape off, clean up the area and re-tape.Any way as the others on this thread have pointed out, it seems that there are just not enough of us complaining to make the manufacturers of the tools or adapters make better products. We all learn to adapt, modify and make do.Let the wood chips fly.
I found a reasonably inexpensive solution to this problem not long ago. Just have a look...

These flexible couplings come in various sizes and they're pretty robust. I've used them on several different connections for which I could not find a fitting, and have been really pleased with how well they work.
Thanks for the suggestion.I will give it a look. I'm concerned about tightening this flexible adapter down on a dust port that measures 1" or less. Maybe they will have a smaller size that would work.It is really frustrating, isn't it, when nothing quite seems to fit. I'm tired of duct taping fittings in place then periodically having to remove the tape and the gooey residue so I can re-tape the fitting again.Oh well, keeps us asking questions and coming up with solutions. Thanks again.
They've got lots of different sizes, I was just showing you an example. If I'm not mistaken, they come in 3/4" - 6" and lots of sizes in between. I bet big plumbing suppliers would have even more options.
I've got one coupling that I move between my ROS & my biscuit jointer. Dust free biscuits every time. Most of the dust on the sander gets sucked up, but that's not the connection's fault. It's good and tight.
Good luck!

Steak and Shake sells drinks in a heavy duty tapered plastic cup. Cut the taper to accomodate the hose and fitting.
Duck Tape works wonders~
One tool, one matching vacuum.
Standards are for sissy's.
Don
Thanks Don I needed that. After all, the broom and dust pan are a lot less expensive to operate, and by the look of some shops some might even say brooms and dust pans are for sissy's too.On second thought, even this idea could be thought of as a standard.
I wanted to add one last message to this thread. On Saturday I went to three stores looking for a solution to my dilemma, an adapter that would connect my Fein vacuum to my Porter-Cable biskett cutter.I checked at Home Depot and a local large volume hardware store McLendons. Neither of these stores had anything in their plumbing department or in there shop departments that could do the trick.I went to Western Tool next and the sales representative there showed me an step adapter sold by Fein I had not seen before. It is designed to adapt to their small vacuum hose, the one that normally ships with their vacuums. I thought that presented the best option so I bought it even though I thought it was expensive at $ 5.00 US. The design of this adapter is quite different from the ones I've seen before. There is a slip fitting that attaches to the hose, then two steps before the last part of the adapter that taper to a champhered end that measures 27/32" ID.I cut about 1 inch off the bottom of the adapter in order to arrive at a ID that would slip over the dust port on the biskett cutter. At first I was disappointed that the fit was too loose. I solved by problem by purchasing a 1 1/4" hose clamp that I used to tighten over the adapter and onto the dust port extension on the tool. The fit was satisfactory.I attached the vacuum to the adapter and cut my biskett slots. I very happy with the results. Very little if any dust. I also tried the adapter on the dust shoot extension on my Porter-Cable circular saw and it fits on that tool as well.I do a lot of work in doors in the living quarters of the house. I feel that this set up will help reduce the amount of dust my work puts into the atmosphere in side my working environment. The connection to the dust port is positive and reasonably fast to connect. There is not gooey mess to clean up after either.I want to thank everyone that replied to my original post for their input and hope that this follow-on will help someone else by shortening their look for a solution the this dusty problem.Carl
