I’m buying a grinder and I’ve learned that a slow speed grinder is best for woodworking tools, but will I be happy with 1800 RPM for all my farm stuff (mower blades, mauls, etc.)? Been using an angle grinder for those.
While I’m at it. Anyone care to recommend a brand?

A 'grinder' like a Tormek for wood working tools is about 100 RPM (I think) and water cooled... EXPENSIVE... but WORKS!
mower blades, mauls, etc.... Been using an angle grinder for those. I would stick with that...
Woodcraft makes a two speed bench grinder. Delta also has a slow speed bench grinder but not sure if it's a single or two speed. You can always run a different stone and or use a water drip or mister to further cool things down. I've used a sanding belt type system and know folks who have used their belt sanders to sharpen. Belts run a lot cooler and you can change grits fast. Lee Valley sells nice felt wheels amd compound for fast honing.
All the grinders we had at work (8" and over) were 1800 rpm. The 8" I have at home (gift) is 3450 rpm. With the higher speed it cuts like crazy with the coarse stone but, with a fine stone it can turn a piece of steel a real dark pretty blue color in a hurry if you're not careful. Personally, with an 8" grinder I prefer the 1800 rpm.
I purchased a Delta, 8" at Lowes, with variable speed from 1725 to 3450 Rpm, includes light and buffing wheel, for under $100.
You can see it here
I must admit that I'm not a Delta fan, but this was a good purchase and I enjoy it.
a Delta, 8" at Lowes..
Dang.. I was just at one the other day and did not see that..
Looks nice and the price is good.. Thanks for the post.. I'll go back and look closer...
Hey Jelly, That does look good, but is that 3 amp motor have enough power for an eight inch wheel?
Yep,
It takes a few seconds to get to full speed, but handles load pretty well. The variable speed feature works real well.
So far I have used mine, to grind custom lathe tool rests, shaper cutters, lathe chisels and I use it for buffing quite often. No problems.
Just looked at Lowes web site and see the special is over, it's now around $129
Slow speed is the way to go; and that 8" grinder jellyrug linked is a really good buy at $100.
