I always wanted a drum sander. I saw plans for one from the plans now web site http://plansnow.com/dn3078.html and am wondering if using this on my grizzly table saw will hurt the spindle at all. This looks like a good design and I have a motor from a treadmill that I could use to power the belt drive with if I wanted to. I also have a small very old delta jointer without a motor that I could do the same with if it is ok on the saw arbor.
thanks

You would be tying up the table saw for power. As far as the small jointer goes, 1/2 hp motor should easily run it. I would not use the saw arbor to run it.
I have built a drum sander from my own design. I use a power feeder to run the boards thru. The hand crank design looks like it may work well for shorter boards, lot of cranking but a homemade drum sander is not for production work anyhow. My drumsander runs on a 3hp 220 volt motor. I found that a small motor ( 1 hp) which I had used at first did not work well. The sander bogged down with light cuts, hence , divots were left in the board. The feed has to be consistent and never stop til the board passed thru.
Think about using a larger motor, there are plenty laying around doing nothing. An electric motor shop is a good place to start for a used motor. Mine came off a compressor that stopped working after 35 years. The motor was still in pristine condition.
