Just purchased a new Jet 17″ laser drill press. When pulling the quill down there is a jerk or bump at the same spot at about 2″ down causing the whole assembly to move off center. You can see the point on the brad point bit move off center. When tightening the set screw meant for this adjustment it either makes the quill too tight to move or causes too much movement. I haven’t been able to fine the sweet point on it as of yet. It goes one way or the other. What possible fixes are there to remedy this problem. Shouldn’t I expect a perfect smooth up and down travel of the quill on a $500 press? I think so. Have owned it two weeks now and the dealer is coming over monday to look at it. What should I expect from him? A fix or a replacement? Is this a Jet defect or do all drill presses have this problem? Thanks all!

Certainly sounds like a defect to me. If Jet is interested enough to come look at the situation, I think they will take care of you. I've had two Sears drill presses of which neither had that problem and I don't think your Jet should either.
Nothing like that on my newer Powermatic, if there was I think it would be a real problem. Make 'em fix it.

Probably a chip on the rack, may not be a problem at all. Could be you could inspect that yourself. Look at assembly drawings; may not be a laparotomy.
Drills all day long.
If it's a brand new drill, make them fix or replace. Quality control for so many tools seems to lack consistency these days.
I purchased a DeWalt cordless drill at Lowe's a few month's ago. It was on sale. The chuck wobbled badly. I returned it and got another. Same problem. I got a refund.
I had a similar problem with my Jet drill press when it was new, couple of years ago. Called Jet customer service and they had someone come to my house within a day or so. Found a rough spot on the rack or casting, don't exactly remember at the moment. Anyhow, Jet customer service was great and the guy who showed up was very professional and had it fixed in less than an hour.
