I’m looking for my first dovetail jig. The prices vary by hundreds of dollars. I’m a hobbiest looking to make some cabinets and bookcases. What should I look for and which jigs have you guys bought that you would recommend? Has anyone seen any reviews in ww magazines that might help? I want to eventually become accomplished at cutting them by hand, but I’m not that practiced and I have some near-term projects that I would like to pursue. Thanks.

I have the pc for half blind dt's. Pretty easy to set up and with a little trial and error, you are cutting with no problem. I just aquired a leigh and am plowing through the set up there. So far, it seems very straight forward and not as hard as others have made it out to be. Down the road, I hope to be handing cutting also.
Have fun.

*Have a look at http://www.stots.com Its a low cost method where you make your own jig from a template that they supply. I've got it myself and it works. It's pretty accurate and it gives tails twice the size of the pins which is better than some of the more expensive jigsMalcolm
*the leigh jig is the best IMO but it is expensive. i bought mine used from a contractor who had only used it a couple of times. if you have the money to spend, then go for the leigh. you might want to consider cutting dovetails on the bandsaw, and this would save you the expense of buying a jig. this would probably be the best solution if you don't plan on cutting a lot of dovetails, as a the expense of a jig only makes sense when you have lots of dovetails to cut and little time to cut them. hope this helps
Thanks to all for your comments. For $40, I'm going to give Stots.com a try. While I'm waiting for delivery, I'll practice some handcut dovetails ala Frank Klausz.
