I’ve made doors that will be surface mounted to the built in book cases on either side of my fireplace. I’m using self-mortising hinges, so they are hidden behind the door. Does anyone have any handy technique for getting the doors positioned correctly side by side and marking the screw holes? Since the doors “float” on the surface and I can’t see the hinge I’m having a lot of difficulty doing this. Thanks for any help.

Install the hinges with the center screw on the stiles or the doors. Add temporary stops so they don't fall in if necessary. Get a deck of cards and shim the doors in place with even gaps top, bottom and at the stiles. Dont worry about the gap at the swing side you'll plane that edge to fit later. Scribe the hinge location with an Xacto knife. Hang the doors with just the center screws. When all's well put in the other screws.
