Matt,
what are the details of your gripe?
Roy - Brisbane
*Just yesterday, I bought a Record bench vise. Noticed that David Charlesworth uses the same one in his book. What went wrong with yours??
*MattIf you have a point to make it should be properly aired. There is no value to your post unless it is given some substance. I use several record tools - some are very good - some are very average - most represented reasonable value for what I paid for them.If you are peeved and want to affect them economically you are far more likely to do that if you explain exactly what you are peeved about.
*Communication works both ways. Perhaps you haven't talked to the right person at record and how you approach them makes a big difference in their response. I stress communication because you failed to communicate your validity in such a post. It comes across as a childish tantrum. Don't mean to offend but I'm just trying to explain how your post reads to me. One does not judge a reputation of many years and many products by one dissatisfied buyer of one item. I've got many of their clamps, planes and their large vise and I've never had any trouble so I've never had to contact anyone there. On the oher hand I'm a buyer for my company so it's my job to deal with warranty issues and it takes a bit of finesse at times but I always get suitable results.
*You should be careful, statements like that could be construed as slander, or is it libel, I forget which is which. But to make a declaration I think is actionable, however, relaying your experience is perfectly within the bounds of the law. It's the statement you opened with which is questionable.
*I own some Record planes. I've never had a problem. I'm trying to figure out why you did not return the tool to the distributor who sold it to you. Why are you going back to the factory for a replacement/resolution to your problem?Get a new plane and move on down the road. No manufacturer is perfect. Now, if you bought several Record planes over an extended period of time and they were seriously flawed, that might be something worth reporting. I deal with all the major mail order suppliers (Highland Hardware, Garrett Wade, Woodworkers' Supply, etc.) When I buy a lemon it gets sent back to them, not the factory.
*A poor woodworker blames his tools! I have many record tools. Like others, there're made a bit more cheaply then the old ones. I also find English Stanley to be fine tools. Most hand tools need just a wee bit of tuning before use. As for the libel/slander question, Slander-what you say-----------Libel-what you write
*I bought one of their planes mail order and it never should have made it past their QC inspection. But, as stated above, the dealer made good on it with a replacement.I will say, however, in my experience the Record castings for their planes are a bit rough and do require more tuning (and, maybe, aging) than better quality tools. That blue paint covers up a lot of mold marks.
*I have a little inexpensive low angle block plane from Record that works well when properly sharpened. No problemo.Frank
*Having restored quite a few planes, I'm impressed by some of the older thick casting Bailey's. If your patient, you can pick one up on Ebay for a song. To me, it seems that quality went down starting with the type 13's. Probably cause by then Stanley was in full control. A thick casting 4-1/2 or 5-1/2 can't be beat! (for their designed purpose)I had much rather buy an old plane and restore it than buy a new plane. I tend to treat tools I restore with more respect.
*SILENCER FOR SEARS SHOP VACUUM is it any good? There are at least two on market,Sears and another in catalogs
