I made a 4 leg bench connected by rails with mortise and tenons. I then laminated strips of wood into an arch which finished at about 1” thick. This arch is connected into the legs about 2/3 way down ( mortise & tenon) on the long side of the bench ( 34”). Where the arch intersected the rail, I cut a matching curve into the rail. When I assembled the parts, all surfaces were glued at the same time with G2 Epoxy from Lee Valley. Where the arch is glued to the rail, should I add a couple screws?

Hey Gary,
It sounds like a fun project but it's hard to say whether you'll need more strength from that joint. What will the bench be used for? If you think it will be put under some stress then I'd strengthen the joint somehow. A small screw or even a brad might be sufficient to keep the joint locked in place. Perhaps a dowel pin might also work and look better. If I understand you correctly you ran the arched rail across the leg so you'll have some long grain to long grain gluing surface. This is good, but something to lock it in isn't a bad idea at all. Maybe you could run something in from the back side so it's less visible too. Good luck. Gary
Gary,Thanks for the reply. The bench is for a friend who is a classical guitar player and he practices a lot. So it will be used by an adult playing guitar. I can put a couple screws up through the lamination from the bottom and they will not be visible. You are correct about some long grain glue surface in the rail.Gary Bowen
