Hey everyone,
Been working for a change so haven’t been around much 🙂
I’m about to build a door for my new handplane cabinet, and plan to use a cedar beadboard panel in a rail and stile frame. I have some great quartersawn wood that looks like maple for the rails, but it’s not enough for the stiles. I’m planning on using 3/4″ thicknesses with stocky hidden M&T joints. 3″ wide rails, 2″ wide stiles. Am I just asking for trouble by using a different wood (I have a few things that are similar but not the same species) for the stiles, or am I likely to be OK? What if I used 1″ finished thicknesses rather than 3/4″?
Thanks in advance,
Mitch

mitch,
Go for it, you'll be alright.
Thanks, JW. That gives me some relief.

Provided you keep the rail and style sizes within sensable limits you should be fine; any lingering doubt can be reasured by cross dowling the joints too... bit overkill but if it helps ya sleep easier... ;P~

Notes attached as ordered:
After complaining about the time I spent in the shop making the low cherry bookcase, SWMBO wants another for the other side of the family room - mathing set, don'tcha know...
And, as per your command, I made the downdraft table as big as I could, (2' x 3' x 40"), and built a top so it can be used as an assembly/outfeed table as well.
I trust this all complies with your strict standards...

Not bad.. not bad at all... see what you can do when you apply yourself..?? ;P~
Has the downdraft made an impact with your dust situation..????Mike Wallace

Absolutely - For sanding freehand or with the belt/disk sander (I just place it on top of the table), as well as for freehand routing. It's got the same kind of squirrel cage blower motor I used for my air filtration system, so it's pretty powerful.
The only real downside was having to drill 384 holes in 3/4" MDF - burned up a few spade bits, I did...
C'est la vie,Mitch

Are you the guy that's been peakin in the windows of my shop? LOL
I've got a cabinet for my router bits made of a potpourri of different wood. (I think my third grade teacher may get angry at that spelling.) Every piece is a different species, including the rails and stiles. My wife hates it, which is probably why I love it so much.
3 1/2 years, it's never had a problem. It's all 7/8's stock.
Jeff
Jeff,
First, I think your spelling's OK. Second, I'm impressed that you made a cabinet out of multiple species and it's had no problems - doesn't that kind of go against the laws of Bruce Hoadley, et al?
Thanks for the support.
Cheers,Mitch

I really don't think it's that big of a deal. It's rails and stiles with a glass panel. The case sides are only 10 inches deep. I have 2 dehumidifiers running all the time in my shop during the summer, so the RH stays pretty constant. I used MT joints for the rails, and the case. Next time, I'm gonna dovetail the case for a better look. I think that cherry or walnut pins coming through a maple side looks great.

Go for it. Several years ago i came into a bunch of hardwood crates i was going to use for firewood , { it was free}. After looking at them i decided it was too good for firewood. I dismantled them, removed all the fasteners, and stickerd them for about a year to dry. I built cabinets for my shop with the lumber .there were quite a few diffrent species, so i randomley used it for diffrent parts. The doors are rased panel and i glued up the panels randomley using diffrent species. They turned out prettey nice.
Have a nice day Lee.
Lee,
Thanks for the good word. I'm psyched.
Take care,Mitch

Since you're just collecting opinions, I would say it would be okay from a functional point of view.
Aesthetically, however, mixing species for the stiles/rails offends my need for consistency and uniformity.
But then again, when Picasso started messing around with cubism, I'm sure there were plenty of folks who told him he ought to stay with straight portraiture.

Hey Michaelangelo,

Actually, if it weren't for a shop project, I'd probably make sure the rail & stile materials matched; but for this I just want to make sure I wasn't creating a structural nightmare.
That said, a couple of pieces I'm designing include contrasting light/dark woods, such as walnut & maple or cherry and maple, and I made the attached cherry/maple desk that I find quite pleasant. So I guess it's a matter of intended use, good/bad design and taste, for which I must admit there's no accounting.
See ya,Mitch

Nice table, and no, different species for the top and bottom doesn't clash at all with whatever aestheic sensibilities I may have. In fact I like it. But with the sitles/rails thing, to me it would be little like you decided to use walnut on two legs and maple on the other two.********************************************************

Thanks for the compliment. And I don't disagree - normally I wouldn't contemplate it - but for this purpose it should suffice. I'll upload a pic when it's done.Mitch

I agree with you, even though I made one with different woods. It's just a router bit cabinet. I would never use different woods for a piece of furniture. When my daughter gets back from vacation with my camera, I'll post a pic, so you can tell me how ugly it is. LOL. At the time that I made it, I didn't have enough shorts laying around to make it with all one species.
Now, I think my shorts pile is as big as the stickered stuff in the woodshed!
