Has anyone ever tried the Delta 43-505 Router/Shaper? Is it good enough for a weekend woodworker?
I was looking into the possibility of getting one with my Christmas bonus (if I get one ha ha).

Hi,
Delta shaper/ router. Yes I bought one last year to make some moulding for my house. Figured it would be great. Interesting concept and reasonably priced......But.
Delta advertises a 3 lipped cutter head that attaches to a spindle and makes it a real shaper not a router in a table. It comes with a 1/4' and 1/2' collet. As for the 3 lipped knives, they discontinued them before they sold any!!! If you wanted it for router bits only then it is a good machine. Stable and powerful enough if you take it a little easy on it in hardwood. The big cutters had to be cut in 2 passes. All in all not to bad for the weekender.
I bought myself a Porter Cable 3 1/4 hp router and I just use that in the Bosch router table. It works really well and I like this a lot more than the router/shaper. Lots of power. It costs more to set up by about $175 Canadian (so these days thats about $5 US. LOL) Really good in the nasty curly stuff.
Final thought is the router/ shaper is good if you don't want the 3 lipped HSS cutters. Oh yeah, the dust collection on the fence worked really well! I used my Rigid vac on it and it was like magic! All the dust was gone!!
Hope that this helps
