I’m looking for a remote to turn my dust collector on and off that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg. Any suggestions?

I've used the :Long Ranger system, which comes in either 120v or 220v versions. Price is around $50 give or take.
depends on what and arm and a leg goes for in your parts
I've had the unit from woodcraft on my DC for years and its been flawless in its operation. I liked it because the remote is small (about the size of your car key fob) and you can order a second one. I keep one clipped to my TS and one to my BandSaw. When I'm using the jointer I just borrow one of the others and clip it to my belt loop.

The one above is for 220v and if you need a 110 they have the same uinit in 110. An extra remote will cost $21.00
PS you don't really need two remotes, but I misplaced mine and got a second one and boom the first one showed back up (the wife found it still cliped to my jeans in the dryer. Amazingly the thing still worked. I'd love to have the unit that attaches to the power and senses when you turn the tool on and it automatially turns the DS. I saw another one called ecogate that had sensors on the dust gates that when you open them it cut the DC on. All real cool but for the cost my unit gets the job done.
Thanks.
Thank you both. Under $100 was just what I was looking for. For some reason I thought they cost a lot more.
Automator
Bones,
You might do a search on the Automater. They were featured in a Popular Woodworking article Oct 2005 titled Efficient Shop Wiring. I picked up 2 off of eBay, but haven't seen them for some time.
They sense the current in the line, provide a delayed start, then a delayed stop after the dust generator is shutdown, so most of the dust is in the bag before the dust collector shuts down.
They were selling pre-made units and a standalone module that could be wired into the panel. The manufacturer is/was R.F. St. Louis 1-800-526-0602.

Long Ranger
I too, have the same 220v long ranger as Bones and also have two remotes. I sure saves many steps. I got mine from Eagle America, and yes, I do work there. Eagles is about $1.00 less than Woodcraft so the only basic difference will be shipping, what ever that may be.

DC remote control
I'm using an X10 controller for my Oneida 2 hp collector. The outlet module I'm using is the HD245, their website presently shows this at $29.95. This can be controlled by a "mini controller" )MC460) which plugs into a 110 outlet and costs $13. I've got a transceiver (TM751, $12.99) and several wireless controllers (SS13A, list $19.99) located throughout the shop, many located near stationary tools such as the jointer or radial arm saw. They also offer a small transmitter that can be carried easily. The X10 website often offers package "deals" where for example a package of several of the remotes costs little more than a single remote.
The X10 stuff can be rather addictive. I've now got controllers for lights and air cleaner fans and other such items. The one thing that I really do NOT like about X10 is navigating their website. It's cluttered up such that it can be a problem to sort through all their advertising hype and find the device you're after.
thanks again to all for the input.
no remote required
My dust collector, the shop floor, works constantly. I just hope that no one turns off the power (gravity).
My other dust collector, the furniture upstairs, has a remote warning system, my wife, that automatically warns me when I leave the door down to the shop open. The current "ring tone" says"don't you dare start sanding with the basement door open!"
I use a long ripping
My DC is in a corner of the shop behind my bench and a stack of wood. I usually switch it on and off using a six foot long piece of cherry that was ripped fron the edge of a 4/4 plank.
Switch Extension
I have a similar activation unit for one of my switches. Easy to adapt to physical changes in the stack.
Don
My problem is that I have the machine running and the wood about to be fed when I remember that the DC is not on. When I slap my self in the forehead I let go of the wood and it falls on the floor and when I stoop down I can't get back up. Old age is hell.
I went and bought the Woodcraft remote and used it all day today and it works great. It even started the DC from the floor above the shop. I Keep the fob on a lanyard around my neck and clipped to my shirt so it doesn't end up wound around saw or lathe or jointer blades which would be very bad.
Try clipping it to a belt loop, it works for me.
Remote fun
Prankster me had some fun with my Grandsons. Deciding it was time for a cup of coffee, I told the boys not to touch a thing till I got back to the shop with my coffee. Well I took my DC remote with me and headed for the house, on the way I hit the remote switch and turned on the dust collector and chuckeled all the way to the house and back. As sober as a judge I opened up ;the shop door and asked. WHAT DID I SAY WHEN I LEFT. ??????? They were a bit nervous, but I finally set them straight.
