Many of the Knotters gave me some feedback on walnut sources all over the US. Many thanks. My learning curve on this journey has been steep. From the claro slab world to the specialty stops in Pennsylvania its been a journey filled with surprises. After all of the searching I found some or someone found me is more like it.
It happened right here on Knots. Not googling websites. A guy who looks in on the forum sent me an email and we worked together to find what I needed. I won’t bore you with sales pitch stuff but, if you happen to be on the east coast and you want eastern walnut to match boards you have, I can point your compass to Virginia. He’s not giving it away — he makes his living slowly milling specialty wood for guys like me. Someday you might have a need??
I got what I needed for my Lonnie Bird desk project so its back to the desk bookcase after these 4 chairs go out the door.
photos of the wood:its just 2 boards that I shot on both sides. They are 7′ long and vary in width as you can see. I will use them for the raised panels in the book case and the desk lid.
The wood I have been working lately has not spoken to me. These boards spoke english: Get to work.

Dan,
beautiful wood. Any chance of posting the name of the gentleman you obtained the lumber from?

Here is the information on the sawyers I felt were very helpful. Both sawyers do specialty woods and they have time to talk to you and understand what you need.

I found a bunch of the high-end yards have fabulous websites, a soft spoken receptionist, lots of pictures of wood they had last year and no time to help you right now.

My take on the thing: If I don’t talk to the sawyer, no deal. Everybody is different of course, but I buy just about all of my wood from sawyers and I just like going as direct as possible.

The wood in the photos is from Rick Herbine. He is a very nice guy willing to work with you thru the whole process. Rick was extremely helpful with me and I would recommend his service outright. His address is in Leesburg but I believe his cutting operation is in <!----><!---->Harrisonburg<!----><!---->. Don’t know all the details. From comments in the threads and some profile information that I see, it looks like a bunch of Knotters are in the D.C area. Maybe Rick will be a good source for you.

Justin Schweitzer, another Virginian to the west of DC is a small mill operator and probably looks at some of the same trees that Rick looks at. Who knows? Another source and a fine individual. Good Hunting.

Please do not send requests directly to me asking for website address information. I don’t have it. I found these guys the old fashion way.<!----><!---->
