Craftsman Lathe 15″ Drive Belt – Gates
I have a Craftsman Professional 15″ wood lathe. It is a great tool except for the drive belt which is a small belt that is toothed, if you have a catch or two it quickly wears out. If I just did spindle work it wouldn’t be an issue, however, turning green bowl blanks it is tough for me to not have a catch. So, here is the question, when I order the belts from Sears, they are $30, does anyone have a cheaper source? This seems expensive to me for a small belt (Gates 207-3GT is the number on the belt). I can buy a serpenine belt for my truck for less money.
I go through 1 or 2 a year so it isn’t a huge deal but I would still like to save some $.

I could be way off base here, but it looks like a timing belt. Take a look here at McMaster-Carr, see if anything fits?
Interestingly enough, when I entered "207-3GT" into Google, the majority of hits were from Japanese or Korean web sites.
But there was also a hit on a Sawmill Creek thread that pointed to Belts for Anything as a source.

Looks like the right thing.
THANKS for the info. I will contact them tommorrow. I knew I could count on the Knots Community.
Thanks again for the info. on The Belt Store 337.235.9736. They have an ok website, but have great customer service on the phone. If you need a belt for something out of the ordinary, check them out. I just ordered belts for my lathe, $9.86/belt compared to about $30 from Sears.
replacement of small cog belt
Hi Pheasant Hunter:
I noticed your post from 2009 about replacing the small cogged belt on your Craftsman Professional 15" x 38" lathe. I have one, and I shredded the cogs off of it too.
I'm fairly handy with my hands, but I'll be darned if I can figure out how to get to the cogged belt. Does the jack shaft that goes from the cogged belt to the Reeves drive have to come out? Or do you take the whole motor out? In other words, how do you get the old belt off and the new one on-the whole mechanism seems to be pressed in place.
Can you give me a few hints? I love the lathe and would like to get it back to operating condition.
Thanks,
Roger
