I have a large (5 feet tall) imported giraffe (from Africa) made from solid rosewood that has begun showing hairline surface cracks. Do you have any suggestions regarding any polishes or oils that may prevent these from getting any larger. Thank You. Steve Pepper [email protected]

I am not being mean but what you are asking is : are there any bandades that will stop this broken arm from getting worse.
Topical treatment won't help. Probably nothing will help. The wood is drying and shrinking. Something HAS GOT TO GIVE. Maybe maybe if you could increase the humidity in the room it is in. I don't think even that would work long term. Perhaps if this piece of wood were hollowed out. A lot of work !
Call the cracks "character".

sp,
It's hard to say without seeing , shoot us a picture if you can .
Maybe you could carve or rout some bow tie key ways to limit further movement .
A spline or a Dutchman as a repair .

I'd experiment with Pentacryl...call them and explain your situation and see if they think it would work on your giraffe.
in the old days, there was a treatment called PEG (poly etlelene glycol) that would basically replace the moisture in the wood.
check what treatments wood turners use for turning green wood.
