Reduce the resistance when plaining
A footnote on page 17 of their 2005-2006 catalogue says "With some planes, such as a smoothing plane, a corrugated sole can make planing easier by reducing friction between plane and wood, especially resinous woods.".
The corrugated sole of any plane is much easier to flatten as there is less metal to remove. I try to buy corrugated when I am looking for a new one.
