Cordless impact driver opinions wanted

Has anyone used a cordless impact driver? I am considering purchasing either the 12V Makita or the 14.4V Dewalt. If anyone has any experience with either of these I would appreciate your comments.
Also, has anyone had problems with the Dewalt 14.4 batteries? I have been very cautious in charging them according to the recommendations by Dewalt but am finding that after approximately 2 years of intermittent use they are both losing their ability to retain a charge. Does anyone know if the Makita batteries perform better?
Thanks in advance for your comments/suggestions.

I have a makita. The general attitude over at the taunton breaktime board is also the makita. Id say roughly of all the impact driver owners over there 85% makita, 10%panasonic multidriver and the rest the other brands.
Breaktime has numerous threads on this subj.

Thanks for the information. Breaktime has a lot of good information on the Makita but very little on the Dewalt. Does anyone have any experience with the DW?

No but I think Katz over at JLC did a review of them. I have a Mak so I cant really give any info on the DW

I have the mak 12 v and love it.
I can't make any long term claims, I've only had it since christmass, the one thing I can suggest is to make sure the one you purchase comes with the 2.6 ah batteries, mine came with 1.3 ah and they do not last as long. I bought the 12v mak drill just to get the 2.6 ah batteries, the cost of 2 more batteries was almost as much as buying the drill, the drill is also very good.
I've driven 6 in screws into pine 2x with out predrilling and with out any sort of problem, they went in like a knife through butter. Mine is used mostly for remodeling work.
One word of caution, it has A LOT of torque, it will break off screw heads with out blinking if you try to go into hardwood with out predrilling, it can also snap the head off a small torx bit as I have found out 5 times to date..
