compound tilting d.p. table worthwhile?
Good people,
I have twice posted a question to “Assign me an expert” that has disappeared even though it is initially acknowledged as posted.
The question is:
Drill presses in the 17″ category and $500 price range are now appearing that have a compund tilting table. The table tilts not only the conventional left and right, but also forward 0 to 45 degrees. You pay a premium of $100 or so for the forward tilting feature. Is it worth it? For example, for the operations that feature is meant to facilitate, does it save you the trouble of constructing jigs that are time consuming and difficult to make and use?
Is this question, for some reason, out of bounds? I can’t imagine why. Anyhow, anybody got any opinions on the forward tilt feature and its usefulness?
Regards,
Fabe
P.S. What in heaven’s name is the WYSIWYG and source checkboxes for? Jeesh, the question and answer features seem awfully complicated to navigate and use, whether Knots or Ask an Expert, or whatever. Couldn’t it be simplified?

Regarding the compound table, manufacturers of all equipment generally try to add features to their products to entice and overcome the competition.
The compound feature is nice, but depending on the angle, sometimes you need a jig anyway to keep the bit from wondering at the start of the cut or to hit the right center-point.
I personally have drilled very few compound holes, but I would like to venture into chair-making so if it were me, I'd go the extra $100 if I could handle it. Many pros probably don't have a compound table capability and get along just fine with a jig on a standard table.

Fabe,
WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) allows you to post all of the HTML (WEB speak) vs the interpreted text. Ya, that makes a lot of sense, eh! :-)
Entries in Knots are in HTML if that makes any sense to you.
Is this question, for some reason, out of bounds? Not at all and I'm surprised that you didn't get a response from someone over yonder there..........
My guess about the multi-tilt table is that's manufacturers answer for a cheaper alternative to a radial drill press.
Just guessin,

A Woodworkers mind should be the sharpest tool in the shop!
If you're a regular chair maker then the compound table is probably worth it. Otherwise, you can just make a jig once in a great while.

I think the forward tilt would be handy for angled holes in long material where the pillar would get in the way with side tilt. But I've never needed it yet! Angled block would do the same thing.
