i just made a crotch mahogany veneer table and made the mistake of finishing with water based poly. it doesn’t bring out any color in the piece. i think i’m going to have to sand it off and start over. also thought about sanding it lightly and giving a coat of shellac to ad some depth and color. is this compatible? any suggestion? thanks Barry

Hi Barry-
It would seem to me that sanding lightly and then shellacking will only be useful if your light sanding removes all the wb poly-- if the shellac can't penetrate into the wood, it won't impart any depth. It would change the color (especially if you add an aniline dye), but I think I have a feel for what you're trying to accomplish, and my guess would be that you'll have to remove the wb poly and then use some sort of oil (linseed oil, danish oil, etc.), then topcoat as you'd like.
I might be wrong about this- anybody have any other ideas?
