Hi all.
I’m planning on building a treadle lathe. I’ve done a little spindle turning, am fascinated with the idea of bowl turning, but I won’t be able to spend the dough on the lathe I want for quite a while.
So what I need to know is what size of headstock spindle to buy or have made for it. Is there a common size (1″ x 8tpi) or are there accessories for every size? I need all the help I can get. I’m leaning toward a 1″ spindle, 8tpi with a #2 Morse taper in the end. The outboard end will be the same except left-hand threaded.
What size is the spindle on your lathe and is it easy to find the chucks you need?
Thanks

Just a thought have you ever thought about a Pole Lathe? I think I would like to try one - I have seen them made several ways not just with the big pole outside but that would be cool -I like working outdoors.
might check it out

Hi, I have a fifty+ year old Atlas wood turning lathe. I don't think it was used much as it is in like new shape. I got it at an auction along with a bunch of attachments still in the Atlas boxes with the paper wrapping on them. Having said all this my one big dissappointment is that it has a 1 x 10 spindle on it. Not a real common size. However, Grizzly sells adaptors for a 1 x 10 spindle and so does Oneway. As a matter of fact I've bought a lot of stuff from Oneway and they are super to deal with. One gentleman with whom I was talking said that they (Oneway) had about 100 different adaptors for their products. Getting back to your original question, in my humble opinion, 1 x 8 seems to me to be the most common size for a lathe spindle. Have you considered joining the American Association of Woodturners? An afterthought, there is another woodturning company called Packard that is real nice to deal with too. Bob
