I have just visited a woodworking show at the week-end, most exhibits were the same as last year.
One new one was a product launched by 3M titled “Jooltool”. I was impressed greatly by the concept – somewhat less by the price of US$350.
If it has been mentioned in Knots, I have missed it. What is the general reaction?

In answer to my own question, I see RickL owned a Jooltool in March of 2006. The several references since then have lauded the abilities of the lady demonstrator at several woodworking shows. I wonder if the demonstrator in Brisbane 2009 was the same lady?
Enough said.
Lapun.
If the lady is who I think it is (can't remember her name), she tours with the Woodworking shows. I could be wrong, but I think she had a hand in the development of the tool.Chris @ http://www.flairwoodwork.spaces.live.com and now http://www.flairwoodworks.com)

My freind bought a Jooltool from her a couple of years ago just because he thought she was hot. no joke. I don't think he uses it much since he tends to be more of a power tool guy. Mainly just sharpens his chisels with it.
Ditto. I couldn't resist at AWFS a couple of years ago. She always wears tight tops with a low neckline at these demos. Her name is Annie. Definitely has the sales edge over her competitors (its a lot more fun watching a smiling beauty play with the tools than some old fart ramble on about how sharp he can get an edge (no pun intended)).
Anyway the thing pretty much sits in the corner, I do use it occasionally for gouges and turning tools. The instructional video that come with the unit is more exciting to watch (she's the instructor) than the tool is to use.
I saw her at the Saint Louis Show. Is this a great country or what! I did not buy the tool, but I did see it demo'd 4-5-6 times :)Government's view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it.
If I remember right, she is the one who came up with the design of the Jooltool and she partners with 3M to make the discs for her. She said that 3M wanted to buy her company but she refused. That was a few years ago so maybe things have changed.
It's her husband that invented the gadget. She is the marketing arm of the company.
oh okay. I kinda figured I was geting my info screwed up somewhere. Thanks
ted,
Was the old fart in the same booth as the smiling beauty?

A Woodworkers mind should be the sharpest tool in the shop!
This product has been shown at a the annual trade show in Edmonton for the past 2 years at least.
3M really come up with some interesting and innovative products.
This items seems pricey, but if you add up the cost of all of the sharpening equipment you have, it isn't high at all.
Seems to have a convenience factor that doesn't involve a lot of mess - water or oil, and fast.

Don,Thanks for the positive comment. However, for the anticipated 10 years (max) of active woodworking, I might just elect to stay with the system I have been using for the last 60, or so.Lapun.
