I purchased a Stanley 45 last week a guy was cleaning out his fathers shop. I got it, and all it’s cutters for $25. It did have some damage to the fence that was repaired, so it’s no collector. As well it’s missing the long rods. But I think I can bring it back into service.
I’ve been workking on the basement reno since I bought it. But I noticed that the fence is currently stuck on the rods, I doubt the thing has been apart in 20 years. The thing is dirty having spent the last few years in the back of a drawer in a mechanic shop. It doesn’t appear to have any rust. I’m wondering if there is anything that can help loosen up the fence once I get it cleaned… Will WD40 work?

Based on your stating no rust is apparent, light machine oil is a good choice to get things moving/working. WD40 is OK but I generally use a light weight motor oil - once things are moving, I wipe off all the oil and let the tool sit on some newspaper for a day or two. Do a final cleaning with some mineral spirits and either wax the tool or reoil it, depending upon which makes the most sense.
WD-40 didn't work for me on my 45, but PB Blaster did. Cleaned it with Bon Ami. I dried it with a hair dryer and waxed everything.
