My name is Chuck, and I have been trying to develop some sharpening skills for hand tools.
My sharpening stones have become somewhat clogged with metal filings and need to be cleaned to restore their effectiveness. I have a fine grade Arkansas hard oil stone as well as several inexpensive silicon carbide stones of medium and coarse grits.
Any recommendations?

Hello Chuck,
This question comes up often. I recommend an old pot of boiling water-put your stones in there for a few minutes. Then wipe dry and re-oil, preferably kerosene.
AND a good old hard bristle scrub brush with good old SOAP!
not necessary.
Scrub as much off the surface as you can with a rag. Spray wd-40 on the stone and scrub again. Several applications and the stone will be cleaner. I never tried boiling the stones, try it on the cheaper ones first.
