I frequently need to clamp a small (3 in x 5 in) object to the top of my assembly table (3 ft x 5 ft).
Seems as though I have seen a jig that had slots cut in it and could be raised above the assembly table. Or the top of the assembly table could have slots in it.
Can anyone give me some idea on how I could make something like this>

There's probably an infinite number of solutions, or at least a number approaching infinite. Most will involve putting some sort of hole, keyway, or screws into the top of the table, depending on the amount of pressure that needs to be exerted on the work piece.
For minimal pressure, a T-track combined with a hold-down might suffice.

For greater pressure, adapting an existing clamp through a hole or slot in the table top might be the solution. Or, one of the Jorgensen hold-down clamps might be a better approach:

Thank you for the good suggestions. I looked in my collection of 'Tips' books and I found the one I had in mind.
So, what is it?
This idea I found in the 2003 edition of "Better Homes and Gardens 'Best-Ever Workshop solutions'".It has the slots for clamps and the area (?) for rotating the clamp.Click on the image for a larger view.
