Mel,
Since you seem to be exposed to Pfeil chisels on a somewhat regular basis through work, perhaps you could answer this.
What metal is used on their chisels? HSS, HCS, A2?
I ask in that neither in the recent FWW article, on the Woodcraft site, at least that I could find, nor on the Pfeil’s own site does their seem to be a reference as to the metal used. Maybe it’s just the grey cells failing to fire.
Any help?
Thanks,
Best

BB,
I don't know the steel that the Pfeils are made of. You have already tried on the net. I will see what I can find down at Woodcraft.

Measure your output in smiles per board foot.
They are a chrome vandium mix, a high carbon steel. Most all present and past carving tools are HC. Pfeil lists them as being 55-61 RC.
Take care, Mike
Mike, Thanks for the input. I'm looking at some new chisels and although the LN's are nice and the Blue Spruces are exquisite, I have started look for sometime back toward the HCS area. When I've used Ron Hocks blades in some planes, I've started liking the HCS over the A-2. I thinking that the Pfeil's may be the closest.
Mel said he was going to inquire at Woodcraft. If the CV mix is on the lower side, they may be the ticket.ThanksBB
They are a chrome vandium mix. I'd bet that is true.
Does not really apply here but I have a wonderful old chisel. A Stanley with a PLASTIC handle. Said made in USA. Not sure that means anything. It is about 8 inches long. 0.750 inch wide blade. That steel will hold a edge forever! Unless I drop it on the cement floor! One thing that is strange about it. The back of the chisel is not flat along the length. Sort of curved very slightly. Very flat across the width. The curve makes for nice paring for door hinges etc. Maybe made this way on purpose?
It sort of looks like it cost $2.00 way back when... But it is such a nice tool. Wish I had some in several widths!
Yellow or clear?I've got an old clear one (3/8) that had always been good and faithful companion and a great old yellar (1/4 #60) with a steel cap that holds an edge well and is incredibly sharp. Like to know what the mix was on those puppies.BB
Yellow or clear?
Black!
"Vandium" Surely, you must mean "Vanadium"
Indeed - "Vandium" is the name of an Italian shampoo model.. ;-)
dk,
Thought Vandium is what Vanna White is made from.

Ray,
Not sure about that but I know she is fond of alphabet soup.
