I made some box doors and attached them to a wall cabinet. I want to put some strips of maple on the inside of the doors to hold my bench chisels. I see nice pictures of what I want to do..but no instructions. The chisels will vary in blade size from 1/8″ to maybe 1 1/2″…the handles vary much less..maybe 3/4 to 1″. I don’t know how to do this. My thinking is to do a narrow dado on the edge (like a box joint) about every inch..and then bore out with a fostner bit ..so it would look something like a keyhole. is this a good idea? any suggestions?

Yep...... Use a forstner a size or two under for the hole after matching with the size of the base of the handle on each chisel. Finger joints can be the same size.
Just a thought, magnets work as an alternative.
Behave....

I use a magnetic strip to hold tools, but not ones that need sharpening, such as chisels. The tools become slightly magnetized, which generally doesn't matter for woodworking (what about ironwood?) but it does for chisels. When you sharpen them the swarf will be more difficult to remove than normally. It's just a slight irritation but it is bothersome.

Thanks, I was not aware of that. I don't use the magnets, but have seen others use them for various tools. I wondered about them becoming slightly magnetized. I do sharpen often and I bet the small filings could be a problem ( problem is a diplomatic word, pain in the hinny is probaly a better one). Ha..
I will take the advice and avoid as I have so far. I prefer the wood anyway as sharp edges and anything resembling metal are similar to alcohol and driving, better to keep them apart.
Have a good evening, I appreciate..

One of the magazines had a plan for a chisel holder. Basically you took a peice of stock and secured strips of beveled hardwood between the chisels. The bevel should match the chisels. example (c= chisel): |_ c /__ c /__ c /__ c/_| etc.
Craig,
Thanks, that is helpful. Last night I took a strip of maple and made about 23 keyhole shaped holders about an inch apart. I dadoed 3/8x1/2" forst and then bored with a fostner at the top of the dado. Took about a half hour and appears to work great.
I'm going to apply your suggestion to some of my other tools..cresent wrenchs, pliers, etc. thanks
