CHEAPER piece of wood with live edge????
I have a design in the works for a bench that has a live edge for the top. However, for a 60″ x 40″ x 2″ I’m looking at 3K priced out online.
Good God that’s a lot of dough.
I live in the NYC/NJ/CT area. Anyone know of a cheaper way to get a slab aside from growing a walnut tree in the back yard?
best,

Find a small sawmill in your area and get them to cut you a slab. If they can dry it for you as well, all the better.

Let's see...... Just for starters.... 60" long x 40" wide x 2" is roughly 33 board feet. Now multiply THAT by the relative rarity of a piece this large, and you will see why the price is a high as it is. You may find a better price by shopping around, but I seriously doubt it. Your design may be beautiful, but will you be able to move / work / machine a chunk that size without knocking the live edges off??
If you DO get the wood, take pictures. Many of us 'knottheads' would like to see before - during - after pictures.

Hey, you're out in Long Island? I did a job in Bellport last year.I'm in the city, but I work out of a shop on the weekends in Bushwick Brooklyn. Anyway, I'm fixed on weaseling a discount. You know any nearby sawmills?best,

I'm more of a toy-maker and don't deal with large chunks of trees. You could try Harned Lumber Mill in Commack or Urban (Suburban??) lumber in Huntington Station. I'm just about mid-point between the two. Several members of the LI Woodworkers club like Lakeshore Hardwood, but he's all the way upstate. Perhaps J & A Lumber in Bohemia?? could also help. If you're not in a rush, one of the members of the Long Island Woodworkers has been talking about having the club auction off some of his slabs. I DO NOT know what hew has, but he's been talking about a'trailer-load' size accumulation.
Keep an eye on our website for details... http://www.liwoodworkers.org.

Check on Claro Walnut from the west coast. It grows much bigger than Eastern Black walnut.

I buy most of my hardwood from this place in Sheffield, Ma, Berkshire County.
I bought a Bubinga slab 5/4 X 53" X 96" for a dining room table.
I don't know the cost of shipping but they have some of the nicest large slabs in all kinds of wood.

Wow, a 40" wide Walnut slab that is more than 8/4 thick is quite the slammer of a slab..
Ok, usual disclaimers apply, might want to check out this web site http://www.thinwood.com/. The Sawyer, Josh Brower bought a piece of one of the worlds largest Walnuts. He may have something that might suit your needs..
