Picked up several desk lamps the other day at Walmart for $5 apiece. The kind with the flexible goose neck shaft. I took off the plastic base and the plastic wrapping the flexible metal shaft. By drilling a 5/8″ hole I am able to mount the end of the shaft in my tools. The kind I got uses the high intensity lamp with the small base. I put one on my lathe, my drill press, and on my BS. Tied them into the on/off switch. Sure helps old eyes! Got two more to mount somewhere.

Sounds like a good idea. I too like extra light when I'm working. I should do the same thing with my scroll saw. Always seem to want more light when using it.
Another source of cheap lamps. I've picked up a couple of the desk lamps with the long spring loaded articulated arms from thrift stores. You know the kind that come with the cheezy little plastic table top clamp that breaks easily. $1 ea. Drop the shaft into a hole, or build a simple angle bracket with a hole in it. Got a couple over my workbench. When doing detail work, I turn them on and swing them in close for extra light. One is close enough to my baby drill press to light up things. When not needed swing them in tight to the wall.

Good idea. Need one on my scroll saw. I hate going to the new Super-Walmart, too many people in one place. ha..ha.. Will send someone. ha..ha..

Not as cheap but very compact are the Littlelites used in audio and video facilities. I have a couple of them and they are easily mounted and very adjustable:
