I’m thinking about buying a new bandsaw, so I have been downloading various bandsaw manuals to help me deceide. In the Grizzly manual for their 17″ model they talk about the saws two speeds. 3300 fpm for regular cutting and 1600 fpm for fine smooth cutting.
I have never heard of this???????? I always thought the the slower speed was for cutting metal and all the bandsaws I know run about 3000 fpm. Is this common? I would like to know if anyone uses two speeds in their work?
Any input would be appreciated
Dennis
(Also I would like to know why the spell checker on this forum wants to make bandsaw two words (band saw)

Metal is around the 200 fpm range and dropping the speed would be best done with a gear box. A step pulley won't even get you close. Far cheaper to buy a horizontal/vertical saw dedicated to metal. That's what I do. Plus it a pain to clean the oil off from metal cutting. I cut metal and wood randomly on a regular basis.
Dennis,
Base your blade speed on what the blade manufacturer recommends, not the saw manufacturer. Same goes for tensioning.
There is some good information at this site:
