The melamine available from my supplier now comes with chamfered edges on the long sides. The chamfer is normally about 1/8 inch, but sometimes will be close to 1/4 inch. I’m told the reason for this is that the manufacturer had been sued on several occasions by people who’d been cut by the sharp edges when handling the sheets.
My complaints with the chamfered edges are
1) Makes it much more difficult to judge that the edge of the panel is flush against the rip fence of the table saw
2) More difficult to measure diagonals on cabinet boxes without sharp corners
3) Panel edge doesn’t fit as snug in a dado
OK, so the chamfer can be ripped off before pieces are cut from the panel but then I don’t get a full-sized sheet. And as stated at “1)”, getting a straight rip isn’t as easy as it should be.
We, as consumers, have only ourselves to blame for manufacturers trying to protect themselves from our filing lawsuits when we injure ourselves by our own actions. And eventually we as consumers end up paying the price. What’s next? Local hardware store will no longer be able to cut glass for customers because the pieces will have sharp edges? So the next time you do something stupid and hurt yourself, think twice before even considering suing the company that made the product that you used incorrectly. And if you’re on a jury for a case of someone bringing such a suit, tell the plaintif to take a hike.

Hmmmm interesting, just yesterday I actually lightly cut myself on some melamine that I just put edging on but haven't had a chance to trim back yet. Maybe I can sue the utility knife company because I hadn't had a chance to put a new blade in the knife at that point to be able to trim off the edging. I hear ya there, frivolous law suits are going to be the end of society. I am all for products being improved to better perform and be safer as long as the product is still usable after the redesign but also people just don't take responsibility for their own actions anymore, it's always someones else's fault and not theres for doing something stupid.
