I’m a junior woodworker and still got lots to learn. I’m finishing a mantel made of white cedar. I was thinking of using a water based urethane but would like to first bring the grain out with keeping it pretty natural in colour. Can someone make a suggestion?
Another concern would be the right product due to the heat of the fireplace. Minwax appears to be a popular product in the home depot type stores… any thoughts?

Diane,
My apologies for my delay in getting back to you. I've had some computer problems.
As long as you don't mind using an oil finish I would recommend Waterlox Original. It's extremely easy to use, just follow the directions on the can. It will give you a much better look than a water based poly or a minwax product. I don't know if the big places carry it but you can find it in a good painthardware store.
With any oil finish be careful on how you dispose of oily rags. You can hang them out to dry in a shady spot or wet them well with water.
There won't be any heat issues with the fireplace.
