After working in the Nuclear Industry for 20 years and being laid off, I’ve decided to make a career change and do what I enjoy in building Cabinets and furniture. I have taken Cabinet Making 1 and 2 at a local Vocational School and have a B.S. degree in Engineering, and an Associates in Drafting Tech. I also have a certification in Auto Cad release 14. I have designed and built cabinets and tables in my workshop. I was wondering if there are others out there that have traveled down a similar road and would like to share thier experience and advice.

I'm heading down that same exact path myself. If you take a look at my Reitrement post you'll find some invaluable comments on the subject. Since I'm just begining to put it together, I really don't have much more info than whats in that thread but I'll keep you posted as I progress. One thing that has just recently inspired me to proceed was that the city I live in was just designated as the best city in the country to do business in, (Santa Rosa, Ca). It has an extremely diverse population and this is a very good thing for someone starting up. The number one thing you need to do is research. I started my research with a simple thread and that produced a multitude of new areas.
Good Luck

Thanks Steve and best of luck in your new endeavors. Keep in touch and let me know how you make out.
Since I am new to this site I will have to find out what a thread is :).

Oh.. yeah, I was doing that assume thing again. A thread is all the messages in a particular subject title. If you look for the subject title Retirement you'll find the message thread that I am talking about. Well at least thats the best way I know how to explain it. Hope this helps.

Well can I join the party. I didn't actually retire as I am only 58 but I just got sick and tired and quit the computer industry. It was going downhill anyway. I quit last year in March, so it has been just over a year since I had a job. I moved back home to Louisiana where I still owned a Craftsman Bungalow in need of some restoration. I built a 2 car garage for a workshop and started my own business doing woodworking. I have done some projects for neighbors, business people, local bank etc... and some for myself and working on the house at the same time. I call myself semi retired. I stay busy and sometimes think I have bitten off too much but I usually get it done on schedule. I shop is full of tools and pretty much have everything I need at this point since I spend all the money I make on that and the house. My wife supports us, God bless her soul. I am a happy woodworker. So that's my story.
