Hello All,
I picked up a rusted up plane at a thrift store to convert to a scrub plane a la Paul Sellers.
I cannot id the plane using the Stanley ID chart. It is obviously a FrankenPlane, but what was it originally?
I am going to file the mouth wider next, but I want to be sure it is not a desirable body someone may want to collect first.
Thanks

11 1/2 x 2 3/16? Stanley 5 1/4.
Yes of course, forgot to add the size. I measured 11 1/2 by 2 1/4, which can easily be 2 3/16.
However, the 5 1/4 is listed as having 1 3/4 wide body. This one is wider. Also, no number on the body as found in an early body. Or perhaps on a lesser quality offering?
Thanks
Pretty large for a scrub plane. I would setup as a super smoother or try plane. Get something smaller for a scrub.
Sound advice, but my smaller planes are in good nick. Not to be molested. This is the one I found for little cash. Or, the best scrub plane is the one you have.
The 5-1/4 uses a 1-3/4 iron, same as a number 3. It's really just a long 3, just as a 5 is a long 4 -- both have 2" blades.
I can't recall the width of a 5-1/4 body right now.
I measured my 5 1/4 to get those numbers. No model # on it either.
That may not be a Stanley frog. Either that, or the lateral adjustment lever has been replaced with a non-Stanley part.
MJ, y0u make the sounder case, especially as you have one like it.
John C2, I agree that the frog looks suspicious, but it fits perfectly and the lever seems to be too well mounted to be an aftermarket bit. Then again those old timers were pretty crafty.
here are a couple more photos. Check out the wonky lever cap.
Pics below. At some point I went through the type tree, because the fridge magnet protecting the iron says "1873"
Frog looks the same except for my new washers.
I agree, same plane. Thanks for the tip. Mine has been messed with, I think the iron is not original as well as the cap.
I have re-assembled it and it works well. I like the size and weight. A good scrubber for 5 bucks and some work bringing it back to life. Not a bad deal.
