Planing MDF
You can plane MDF however, the glues used to make MDF will dull your knives very quickly.
Neither is a good idea
Honestly neither is a good idea. Both contain glues, resins, and even debris that will quickly dull your knives. If you really have to dimension sheet stock like that, just be prepared to replace your knives.
plane MDF?
If I had to plane MDF or plywood I would use my drum sander. The center of MDF is softer than the outside faces. The center of plywood might end up in a cross grain ply.
Good Luck,

planing plywood
If you plane plywood from only one side you'll end up with a sheet of unbalance veneers and the material will not remain flat. The inner plies are normally of inferior quality, you're likely to find unfilled voids. If you plane down to a surface where the grain is running across the width of the planer you're running a good chance of shredding the layer.
