this is a real basic question
got a PC 690(?) router
directions say when looked at from the top the bit spins clockwise so u should move the router from left to right. i interpret this to be clockwise.
directions say when using a templete as pictured picture appears to have the router upside down as if in a table. the outside edge they have the movement counter clockwise. inside clockwise.
they advise to be careful about climbing.
took a test piece. router on top going clockwise it climbs. going counterclockwise it doesn’t.
is it correct that is router on top, if router between you and piece go counter clockwise, piece between you and router go clockwise?

Left to right with respect to the edge nearest you would be counter clockwise.

bobl,
I got confused by all those instructions and simpflied the issue: move the wood into the cutter. In another words, the bit moves clockwise in your hands and counter clockwise in the table (upside down). Now, I want the wood moving in the opposite direction of the bit....period. So if I'm rounding over a rectangular board..it could be right to left and left to right depending which edge of the board...the key is moving the it into the stock, or the stock in the opposite direction of the bit. I may be all wrong, hope not.
Taking BG's perspective should be very helpful to you. You do not want to have the router bit "helping" you move the wood. You want to move the wood against the spin of the cutter. Doing that provides you with increased control of the stock.
It's natural for this part of routering to be confusing, and even a little counter-intuitive. But as long as you know which way the bit is spinning, you can figure out which side to feed from.
Later on, when circumstances require it, you can try the opposite technique, which is called "climb routing".

Bobl,
To answer your question - this is from Porter-Cable's online 690 manual.

thanks for the replies
jackie, that picture is part of my confusion, the bit looks like it is coming up from the bottem, the router body below the bit. since the bit rotates clockwise when looking from the top, it would be rotating counterclockwise bit up. so i would think feeding into the cutters would be clockwise in the picture.
have to reread this thread a couple of times

All the replies are good.
I know from experience how easy it is to get confused.
My simple technique is this.
I look at the router bit's cutting edge.
Either the wood is fed into that edge (in a table) or the router is fed (or pushed) into the wood to that edge (by hand).
Before turning on the router, hold the edge to the wood and simply look at the way it goes.
Forget the pictures or the right to left (left to right) or whatever.
The bit cutting edge has to go into the wood.
Has kept me out of trouble for 30 years.
