Branding Irons – which type/one is best?
I am thinking of buying a branding iron to mark my work. I am thinking I might like somewhere between 1 and 3 differnat designs based on the product or size of the project.
What type of branding irons are out there? Do any allow for changeable heads? Which ones are good and which ones should I avoid?

I have a branding iron that was received as a gift years ago. It is the type that you must heat with a torch. I don't recommend this as it takes a long time to heat up. I don't know about the electric heater versions. I currently just sign and date my work instead of using the branding iron since it is much more personal.

Steve, what method / tools do you use to "sign" your work? I am looking for a way to autograph and date my wood projects. Most of which are in red oak. I agree that an autograph would be more personal.
Thanks, Steve.
I have tried carving my signature with a Dremel type tool but it is awkward and often hard to read so I changed to just using a high quality drafting pen with black india ink. Be careful when finishing particularly if you rub your finish on because the ink can bleed. Try it out on a piece of scrap first and test with the finish you intend on using. I am at the AAW Symposium now so I can't tell you what brand I am using but I think it is a Mars-Staedler fine point. I have run across other makes that don't seem to work as well.

In looking at the various branding iron companies, I have seen a number whre you can have your signature made into a brand, also your company logo as well, (if you have one)1 - measure the board twice, 2 - cut it once, 3 - measure the space where it is supposed to go 4 - get a new board and go back to step 1
Rick,
I use a Sharpie black marker to sign my work. I have no problems with it wearing off while finishing. I stain, sign, and finish. I also place a "golden" dollar on all my work. Then I know it's worth atleast a buck. You should test on a scrap first, I did.

Is it really saw dust or wood dust?
