I am going to buy a LN block plane. However I cant decide which one.
Which would be the better/more ‘useable’……..standard block plane or the adjustable mouth option?
Would like to burn a hole in the plastic and get both, but even I must draw the line somewhere. 🙂
Whatever it was……………..I didnt do it.

I usually use # jack plane for initial flattening, #smoothing plane for general smoothing and #low-angle block plane for trimming end grain & cleaning saw marks on lumber board's edges. Adjustable mouth is more useful to handle diffrent types of wood grain.

As a first block plane I would get the low angle plane with the ajustable mouth. But remember hand planes are like potato chips one is never enough.

I have both. The little bronze one is cute, but the low-angle one is more versatile and does everything the little one does except weigh less. Both are good tools.
Thanks for the replies.
Am going to order the low angle adjustable. Also thinking pretty hard about a dovetail saw. It would have been so much simpler back when they only made planes......

Go for the dovetail saw as well... you only live once.
I have a LN rip saw, and it's the bee's knees. It's a very nice saw, I hear Adria is nice as well... The cut on my LN saw is excelent, right out of the box. Barring any emergency tool purchases, I'll be ordering one before the end of the month.
Don't know if you are aware of this site/business, but they prices are good and they have free shipping on LN. Last Januraru I spoiled myself with the 60-1/2 and the 9 1/2 block planes. Thanks for the link. The prices are good.
I live in New Zealand, so the free shipping wont apply. Some sellers I have found wont ship here at all. I have ways around that, but it can get a little convoluted.
Anyhow, I will get one. :-)

There are NZ and Oz stockists of L-N tools. More expensive than in the US, but cheaper than paying shipping tool by tool.

To be honest Malcolm, I havent tried looking for NZ suppliers.
I have found though that for the most part I can get an item from the US and including exchange and freight, still be cheaper than those here. Plus I also get access to gear that never makes it here at all. Occidental tool belts being one example. ( Yes I did get, and do love my new tool belt ) :-)

AJ-I have all the LN saws, the dovetail and the Rip and Crosscut. They are great saws, but I have also heard that the Adria saws are really nice also. I live in tasmania at the moment and getting tools is not cheap.Kaleo
http://www.thebestthings.com has great prices on L-N as well as many others. And, fantastic service.
