I have a 3″ thikc slab of black Walnut; I want to use to make a rustic bench for a ski lodge. I want to sand the bark down so in is not so rough.
Questions ?????
1. What should I use to sand down the bark?
2. Will the bark remain attached, or is there some treatment I must do to ensure that it stays attached?
Thanks for any help!!!!!!!!!!

I've found that bark will either want to stay on or come off. One problem with keeping bark on is that it shrinks at a different rate (usually more) than the wood itself, so the bark may buckle. You could glue it back on. For sanding the bark, I'd probably look at a sanding mop if you want to maintain the texture.

I agree that the bark tends to shrink and will often partially peel away leaving elevated curls. You can use epoxy to try to keep it on, but if this is a bench seat, the bark on the front edge may not be practical as it will catch on pants legs and pull fabrics. Depending upon your design, it may work better to have a bark free but natural egde, or keep the bark only on the sides and back. Good luck.
