Hello All,
I am nearing completion of the construction of a 4 ft. x 12 ft. conference table that will be used in a Boy Scout camp meeting room. This table will likely be used as a banquet table too. I need to begin thinking about a “kid proof” finish for the tabletop.
Does anyone have experience with the “poured on” type of tabletop finishes? Please share your experiences and opinions with me. Is there another type of finish I should consider?
Best Regards,
Bill B.

my opinion, conversion varnish is going to hold up as well as anything else out there.

A kid-proof finish for a roomful of boy scouts with pocket knives?
Bullet-proof glass.
Kevin,
Quarter inch steel plate will be even longer lasting. Maybe last till the end of this calendar year.

Behlen's Rockhard Table top varnish. As good as it gets.

Apply the first coat diluted 50/50 with mineral spirits or naphtha. Lightly level sand that (320), apply 2-3 coats full strength, lightly scuff sanding each for dust nibs and leveling as needed. Apply the last coat (after scuff sanding) diluted 50/50 again. Let harden for no less than 3-4 weeks.
Level with 320, rub out with 400, 600, 4-0 steel wool. Stop there for a beautiful satin glow. Or continue with auto rubbing compound (red), polishing compound (white) then Meguiar's Scratch-X (or similar) swirl remover for a glass-like shine.
You'll inevitably get "character marks" (dings, scratches, gouges) but even with the rough use that table will get, it will stand up to many years of use and look good.
