For base cabinets, I would use 1/4 inch melamine. It reflects light nicely and brightens up the otherwise dark interior.
For upper cabinets, I would use half inch or three eights inch melamine. Because I have to hang those rascals.

Boris,
Have you ever tried a shope made "French cleat" or store bought flush metal hanger for hanging the cabinets?
Yep, but........You lose 1.5 to .75 inches from the top cabinet. Usually the homeowner wants to maximize the interior space and doesn't give a rats hindquarters about ease of hanging. So 2x6 blocking between the studs and shoot a bunch of drwall screws into the drywall and blocking. Yeah, yeah, I know, ya'all are not supposed to use drywall screws, they are too brittle. Yeah, and don't use a screw driver to open paint cans either. I still do both.Regards,
