I’m in the market for a 6″ dado blade set. I’m looking for the best value for the money. Has anyone had experience with the “Avenger” dado blades at Rockler and Tool Crib ($49.95). Any recomendations will be appreciated.
Thanks,
Roger

I'd highly recommend the Freud Safety Dado (SD300 on the following page):

I have it, it does an excellent job, and it was a good value. I didn't see the Avenger set when I looked at Rockler, and don't know who makes it, but it's hard to image getting a good, let alone excellent dado set for $49. Maybe depends on what you plan on doing with it.
One of the first things I noticed before even using the Freud, was the absolute precision with which the blades fit onto the saw arbor. An important factor in performance.

Thanks, I saw the Avenger at the Indianapolis store. It's made is China.... Your recommendation was my number two pick. maybe I'll move up. Thanks for the advice.
I don't think you'll regret it. Got a birthday coming up? Mine was half Christmas present from my Sweetie, and half my own $$.
Funny story to pass along, I've never admitted this in public before. When I went to use the dado set the first time, of course I needed a different table insert for it. Had no planer, so I spent an hour shaping the insert out of slightly thick plywood and sanding it down to fit the saw.
Putting the dado blades together, I pondered about how they were to sit in relation to each other, made sure the outside blades were facing out, got it mounted to the arbor below the table level and put the new insert blank in. Slid the fence over to get set for raising the blade to make the dado slot.
Turned on the saw. Smoke everywhere! Billowing out from under the saw. Freaked me out. Thought it must be because I was using plywood. NOT! All that care, and I had put the dado set on backwards. Was sure I had absolutely ruined it. Nope, works like a charm.
Ahhhhhh, it's over, now everyone knows. Boy was that dumb.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
