Well that stinks. Thanks for the heads up. Tom
Well... That's not good.
I have one of their rasps, it's just one of those tools that I really enjoy using.
Go figure, the French do not want to work....

I think it's more of an issue like a strike. They had this Auriou guy by the balls. Each person who made files had to be schooled for 2 years before they would turn him loose and let him make a rasp. Unfortunately you can't just go out and get someone else to man the "rasp-making machine"
Cheers,
Lee
someone should go over there and buy their equipment, bring it back here and start making rasps (if it's possible). It's amazing they went under because of too much demand.. ???
Maybe Thomas Lie-Nielsen can start manufacturing the rasps instead of just selling them.... hhmmm

It's not the equipment so much as it is the knowlege fo how to use it. Since nobody else around cuts rasps by hand, I would imagine that there is considerable time and skill involved in learning in the process--things that do not translate well to the bottom line, hence the closure of a seemingly successful company.Peter

I have been looking at getting one of these for a while, so this pushed me over the edge. Not sure how long they will have them in stock. It is sad to see a company like this go away, but there are two sides to every story.
Thanks for the link.

Josh.. think of the opportunity.... buy as many as you can and sell them on eBay for $200 each when they are no longer available. lol
Be sure and use them first--they'll then sell for more than retail! Tom"Notice that at no time do my fingers leave my hand"
Oh it's a must... They contain artist characteristic after that! ....They're worth double the retail value.

FYI...ordered one from Lie-Nielsen (I like their handles) and they can't complete the order. It sounded from the email that it meant all of the Auriou rasps. Not sure why they leave them up on the website.Josh
Lee Valley's website looks like they still have them. Tom"Notice that at no time do my fingers leave my hand"
Thanks. It looks like LV's supply is pretty limited. I just ordered one from Highland Hardware and they have assured me that they do have one! :)Josh
I'll probably regret not ordering one, but just don't have the dough right now. Tom"Notice that at no time do my fingers leave my hand"
Friends,
I work part time at the Woodcraft store in Springfield, VA. Tonight I looked in the display case that has the Auriou rasps, and there are 23 of them in there. I suppose that I could put up a list of the ones that exist at the store, but then someone might think that I am trying to sell them. I am not.I am always happy to be of service if I can. Let me know if I should post a list or if I should just send a list to anyone who writes me a message to my email. Either way, I want you to know that I get NOTHING out of this except the satisfaction of helping my Knots friends. I will answer emails on my own time. If you see something on the list that you want, you can email the store or call them. I'll send you the email address and the phone number. I guess that the right thing to do is for you to send me a message, and I'll send you the list that I made up tonight. If anyone thinks that what I am doing is wrong, just let me know and I'll stop. I am just trying to help. Thanks,
MelMeasure your output in smiles per board foot.
Mel -I saw about 15 of them in the case at the Palatine, Illinois store as well. They are great tools (I only have one from Lie-Nielsen). I think a lot of this "shortage" may be overblown. The Lie-Nielsen site is not taking orders, and maybe there is some agreement there. I do not know anything about the French Labor dispute, or the way French corporate law works, but if I had to guess, I would say these guys are up and running again in some form in fairly short order. That said, I will try to get my hands on a couple more of their rasps sooner rather than later. I liked the LN version though because of the handles...but a nice set of rifflers is the same either way.I don't think what you're doing is wrong, but I think this shortage will only really become a shortage if the shutters stay on for a year or so.Thanks for the heads-up.
