Can anyone tell me why I get an error message whenever I try to post a picture using the attach files tab? Does this happen to anyone else?

What does the error message say?? One tip, may or may not relate: Be sure your pop-up blocker(s) is either off, or is set to accept the forums.taunton.com web site. Or, as an alternative, use the control key when clicking on the Attach Files button.

Neither of those options have worked for me. I have regular access to 3 computers and I can't post pictures on any of them.
Maybe nobody wants to see the dining room table I just finished?

ASK, email me the photos and I'll post them for you while we figure this out. a_forestgirl @ mindspring.com (remove the spaces). Can you post the verbage of the error message you're getting? What operating system and web browser do you use??forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
Thank you,
No error message. Click on "attach files" and nothing happens. Popups are allowed.
Windows XP SP2
I will send the pictures. It's a PDF with 4 pictures

I doubt that forestgirl will have much luck changing the PDF file, i.e. making it smaller. I would recommend that you download irfanview (just google it). Open the pics in it and select Image and from the drop down menu, select resize. This will preserve the resolution of the original pics, which you want to keep that. You can also change the sizing from pixels to inches, which is much easier to deal with.
To upload pics here you also need to have java script enabled. It's in your browser at the top of the screen, Tools/Internet Options/Advanced.
Hope this helps,Bob @ Kidderville Acres

Also, another mistake that people often make is that they don't wait long enough for the pic to upload after browsing and selecting the picture. You need to wait to get a message saying it has uploaded.

Bob,
The pdf is actually quite a small file. Java scripe is enabled. As I told forestgirl, when I click on the attach files, nothing happens, nothing. The "attach files" box blinks at me and that's it.
I think this all started when I downloaded Internet Explorer 7. Before that I never had any difficulty uploading pictures.
Thanks for trying
ASK
As far as I know, you can't select the images out of the .pdf file, unless it is possible with the Adobe editor program, which I haven't used. I would go with the irfanview routine for reasons I stated in the earlier post.
I haven't tried IE7 yet, guess I'll have to give it a go. Did you wait some time after Browsing and selecting the image from your hard drive?

Just thought of something else. You said the Attach Files button blinks, but nothing happens? Hold down the Ctrl key then click on Attach Files and see if something pops up.

Bob,
Doesn't really blink. It identifies that it has been clicked on but nothing happens. The attach file screen never shows up.
Popups are allowed, holding down the control key does nothing.
It is either Norton or IE7.

This happened to me out of the blue at home. I can post pix at work just fine. This happened over a year ago, way before 7.0. The sysop & I had a few exchanges , but the issue remains unresolved. My 3 year old (antique?) home PC is getting little sluggish and starting to freeze up. The combo burner and CD ROM drives are intermittantly failing. I bought a 320 gb Ext HD and am moving all my files to it tonight. To salvage my weekend (sanity) the PC is going to the shop this time for a scrub and debug of the HDWR. I'm curious to see if the Knots pix post problem returns after I start from scratch. If for some reason this gets expensive I'm seriously considering a mac. I've never heard a Mac guy say yeah after 3 years of accumulated spyware, cookies and windows artifact buildup that you need to reformat your hard drive and start over from scratch. What a bunch of MS BS.John O'Connell - JKO Handcrafted Woodworking

John,
A few thoughts that might ease your mind a bit.
Your 3 year old antique might not be that out of date. When was the last time you defragmented your hard-drive? I'll grant you that PC's might be more labor intensive than MAC's and require perhaps a little more knowledge about how they operate, in spite of Bill's attempts to make them more like a MAC. Don't despair.
I built my PC seven years ago from parts that I bought off the Inet. I have nearly 40 years of experience with computers. Just the way it is. Anyway, until recently I ran WIN 98 with no virus protection, no spyware and relyed on Yahoo to keep spam out of my email and Google to block the nasty Pop-Ups. Never had a problem. Besides the peast creators aren't interested in old Operating Systems, they go for the numbers. To wit, who runs WIN 98 vs. XP?
I recently upgraded my OS to XP. Got on the Inet for 16 minutes and my PC started acting unusual. Hmmmmmm. Did some snooping around the hard-drive and found all sorts of files that I thought didn't belong there.
From work I found AVG (an anti anything you don't want on your PC software company), or more specifically Grisoft software. Google avg or grisoft and you'll find them. I read numerous reviews on their product.
I downloaded their Anti Virus and Firewall product to check it out and so far have had no problems. The thing about spam, viruses, spyware, et al is that you MUST remain current. I know, it sucks!
Installed the program and ran it. Found 3,052 instances of malicious software on my PC! Removed them. Ran it again and it found 1,014 more!. Removed them. I have since found no more. The annoying thing is that you have to update your definitions data almost daily! Another fact of life in this digital world we now live in.
You almost get the impression that the Anti prevayors of software protection for PC's prey on all of us. Who knows better how to infect a persons PC than the person who knows how to prevent it! I also think that those who create these pests should be JAILED! A severe case of inferiority complex perhaps. But that's another rant.
Hang in there man, help is on the way. For some reason I remember a song by that name,Bob @ Kidderville Acres

I keep my Norton subscription up to date, keep the security settings fairly high, run a full system scan ever day, keep my junk mail filters set to my contacts only, etc. but every time I get a message that I have to down load and update of this or that to view some website I JUST KNOW SOMETHING IS PROBABLY GETTING THROUGH. I downloaded and ran MS Defender recently and it found a bunch of malicious sftwr but once removed the performance didn't improve. Time for the scrub a dub dub. At least hard drives are amazingly cheap these days. I went to Comp USA and got an Iomega 320 gb for $150. Pretty amazing since my 1st computer (at work) was a Compaq Plus which was an XT clone with a whopping 10mb HD. I know what you say, I'm just tired of the BS and thinking of defecting.John O'Connell - JKO Handcrafted Woodworking

John,
Do you have Xp with SP2 applied? If so, is the firewall enabled?
The PC world can be frustrating/daunting but obviously they are the lions share of the market. The best way to keep 'em healthy is prevention. Once you get that 'puter cleaned up, make sure it stays that way. Not trying to sound bossy.
Are you the only one who uses it? Whilst there are many WEB sites known for being homes for Inet pests, you don't have to visit a site to get infected. As the name worm implies, they bury themselve in files and come out of them when the opportunity presents itself.
As I said before, I was only on the Inet for 16 minutes with a spanking clean machine and I got 3,052 of the pests. And, oh by the way, I only went to Knots to put up a post! I'm confident that they didn't come from FWW too.
I'm not a salesman for AVG, but I want to tell you, their product works! I download the updates from work as I have DSL there and only 28.8 dialup at home. Lousy phone lines and living in the country doesn't look like any better in the forseeable future. Oh well..............
That just shows to go ya, remember, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

I didn't read all of the messages following your post, but for starters, I think using PDF files to post pictures really limits your audience. From what I've seen, those files tend to be huge. Dial-up member probably won't open them. Might be best to save the presentation software for other uses and just post .jpg images.
If you're not getting a pop-up window, something is blocking it. You might have a pop-up blocker you're not aware of. I'm at a loss at this point. But if you need any help editing photos, let me know. ;-)forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
I just posted two photos answering a question on finishing six-panel doors (35220). I'm sorry, they're huge! How do you resize photos? I posted photos on Breaktime with no problem, but they were taken with a different camera.

I'm no expert but stuart showed me that if you Email the picture to yourself you can reduce it in size then when you go to serch you send that smaller picture instead of the original one.. 800 ones become 130
franchy,
What setup do you have, i.e. puter, OS, Browser?
Bob @ Kidderville Acres

Bob,
puter? Oh! you mean brand name? this one is a HP the lap top is a Dell and the old one is a E machine. Don't ask me anything more about it except the salesman said it was a good one.. (How do you draw a really stupid face)
OS means operating system but I'm not sure what I have. and my browser is AOL. because I'm too dumb to select something else.
Bet you're sorry you asked..
frenchy,
HP the lap top is a Dell and the old one is a E machine = IBM PC.
Right click on My Computer/Properties. This will tell you what OS and other various and sundry things of little interest, :-) :-). Just kidding
Based on the above, I would guess your browser is MS Internet Explorer. To confirm the version, at the very top of the page, when the browser is launched, click on Help, then at the bottom of the drop down menu, select About (Internet Explorer) and the resulting page will tell you, amongst more various and sundry things of little interest, the version.
AOL is not a browser but rather what is known as your ISP (Internet Service Provider). Your browser is that which provides the mechanism to see/communicate with the WEB.
From your previous posts in here I would not consider you to be dumb. You might computer challenged, as to some degree we all fall into that category.
If you say you're dumb or computer illiterate, I will have no choice but to track you down, and come out there and train you!

I have a whole lot of things I need to learn about computers. It's just not a real prioroity. MY daughters don't help, I thought that having teenagers would provide me with all the tecnology updates I wanted but it sure hasn't turned out that way..
OH Dad! Here, get up I'll do it and you go build something.. (with as much disgust as they can muster!)
"AOL is not a browser but rather what is known as your ISP " It's been years since I touched a computer that used AOL, but when I did (my sister's) AOL had their own browser software. That's why, when you go to various web sites, they will often give directions that say "If you're an AOL subscriber (do this)...."

forestgirl.
I stand corrected, to some degree. The reality is that their browser is a modified version of IE, with rights from Bill. They are preparing another version for Netscape 9.0 based on Mozilla. Might be a matter of semantics.

Whatever it is that they do with their browser, and however they develop(ed) it, it seems to be different enough to cause problems. I wouldn't go near AOL myself. Much as I hate Earthlink, ROFL.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
Totally agree with you. Not necessarily being a control freak, I despise software that dictates how you operate your PC.
I haven't tried any of Nortons latest offerings but that's exactly what they used to do. Case in point: Norton Desktop for Windows 3.1 (Yes, I'm dating myself :-). To the point that to fully remove their stuff, you had to reformat your hard drive and start over again.
This issue of problems posting/viewing pics on Knots, IMHO needs to be addressed properly. It keeps coming up and I have never seen a difinitive work on how to properly deal with it. I know, there are so many variations in terms of users systems it can be trying at times.
The dialogue box is a java script according to Mat B. I have both Yahoo and Google popup blockers running and have had no issues with posting pics. The first time I tried it, I couldn't get it to work. I then found out that I wasn't waiting long enough after Browsing and selecting the file. Depending on the file size this time can vary.
Also, pics within a post, as opposed to attachments is another issue that bugs me. You shouldn't have to post them separately, especially when you're trying to explain something that a pic would illustrate your point. Having to put a URL in is counterintuitive in IMO.
I have a 4 m-pixel digital camera, hardly bleeding edge technology by today's standards! I use it at the highest resolution it can handle, something on the order of 1600 x 1400, give or take. If I were to print, it would be ~ 31" x 26"!
Irfanview works quite nicely to resize pics to something on the order of 6" x 4" which works good for FWW, and it's very easy to use and perhaps the best part is that it's FREE!

Norton. Arggghhhhh! I was a loyal Norton user for years and years. I think 2004 was my last edition -- when I found out they had made it impossible to uninstall their product! Nothing infuriates me more. (I didnt' know that went back as far as Windows 3.1) That's why I'm so mad at Earthlink. Their pop-up blocker cannot be uninstalled, and can't really even be turned off (totally) -- it just once in awhile activates itself. Since I hate the way it works, it's a truly frustrating situation.
Norton simply takes way too much processing power and hard drive space. I've gone to two separate programs for spyware and virus/firewall. The new IE7's security stuff is a bit inconvenient, but haven't taken the time to see how to rein it in yet.
I know someone will say "Get Opera" or "Get Firefox" whatever. Sorry, not interested. Like the forum features to work, so IE it is.
Speaking of overly-heavy and user-not-friendly stuff, has anyone noticed how cumbersome Google has gotten?? The toolbar, to be specific. Used to love it, but it's gone from the desktop now. At one time, they had an easily found place to give them feedback about the toolbar. That's gone apprently, take-it-or-leave-it.

"Having to put a URL in is counterintuitive in IMO." It's a pain, no doubt. However, I'm in favor of not making it super-easy to post pictures in-line, given many members' propensity for posting 100kb - 2 MB pictures, LOL. When a pic is posted in-line, you have no option for downloading or not. You're stuck with waiting for the pics to download while wanting to actually read the thread. Also, those pics need to be sized such that they're completely visible in the frame, without having to use a slide-bar to go to the right (they won't "automatically resize" within a frame). I'll bet less than half the members would key in on these problems.
One thing Matt mentioned awhile back is that if you're looking at the wanted picture in a browser window (say you use PhotoBucket for instance), you can right-click and Copy, then Paste in the post you're writing. Doesn't help if you simply use FTP for your pics, though. Can't think of any way to get around the HTMLforestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
Not to beg your question, but you may want to see "viewing images" under General Discussion.
Wow! Those pics really were big. I resized them down around 30kb and posted them in that thread.
First of all, your camera may have a setting for "quality" or something that decreases the dpi or ppi (I don't know much about that particular setting) -- it might say "email" (vs."print" which would be a higher quality image, and much bigger file size).
More to the point, using your photo editing software will get your files down. Those images would have been fine for making large photo prints. The needed to resized down around 350-450 pixels wide. Usually, you do this by selecting Image in the toolbar, and then going down to Re-size. The program should "maintain aspect ratio" which means if you change the width, the program will correspondingly change the height of the image, or vice versa. A more-or-less square image can be set around 350-400 pixels wide and will fit the screen pretty well. I made the door picture a little wider, 450.
With some programs, you can enter a percentage rather than an actual pixel number, Paint Shop Pro for example. I like that the best, because I don't have to do the math, LOL.
You did a good job of framing the pictures -- there wasn't anything that needed to be cropped out. That's usually the first step -- most folk have a whole bunch of non-relevant stuff in their picture, which takes up file space and doesn't add anything to what they're trying to show us. You have to crop the picture by selecting the area you want to preserve. Crop can be under Image and usually there's a toolbar icon for it also.
