I recently finished the outdoor table as described in issue #110 (October 2004) of American Woodworker. The table uses a ceramic tile insert for the top. As of 12/2004, It can be viewed at their web site http://www.americanwoodworker.com
My wife likes it so much that she wants one for our newly renovated bathroom. We have left over 4″x4″ stone tiles. I would like to use 6 of these tiles to create a rectangular top. The table does not have to be waterproof.
My question is, do I need to grout the tiles together or would a silicone caulk be OK?
Would like suggestions on getting an “antiqued” white finish also.
Thanks,
Burt

Grout or silicone would be fine. I'd use grout; easier to apply and seal.
Since it's white oak,you can apply "iced oak" stain, then clearcoat it.
Ever heard of fisheyes in a finish?
Be very careful when using any silicone product on a woodworking project. If ANY silicone gets on the wood, you'll have a very difficult time with the finish -- it just won't stick. And sanding to remove the silicone is innefective -- it just pushes the silicone deeper into the grain.
Use grout.
Unless you're the lead dog, the view just never changes.
Burt,
Attach the tiles to the wood substrate with a construction adhesive, the type in cartridges works well, and then use a standard tile grout between the tiles. For small jobs I think you can get grout in cartridges also. Silicone caulk doesn't look good new and gets uglier with time.

Out of curiosity, with all of the adhesives available, why would they indicate silicone to adhere the tile to the base? I haven't attached the tile yet nor have I opened the silicone tube so I am anxious to hear your suggestions. This table design is fun to make and I'd like to make a few more in different configurations. Thanks,
Burt
You first asked if you should use grout or silicone caulk. Grout is used on top of the tile, to fill seams between tiles. Caulk can do this but is not nearly as durable or compatible (the silicone kind) with most finishes.
Silicone under the tiles to hold them works fine.
